The South Dakota Legislature convenes at 1p.m. CT today (March 31, 2025) for the final day of the 2025 legislative session.
Governor Larry Rhoden vetoed two bills. During the regular session, the House could not overturn Rhoden’s veto of HB1132, which would have expanded childcare tuition assistance for childcare workers.
Today, representatives and senators will consider sustaining or overriding Rhoden’s veto of HB 1169. The bill would modifying signature requirements for constitutional amendment petitions. It would require initiators to obtain signatures in each of the state’s 35 legislative districts.
Following the veto session, attention will turn to future legislative priorities. At 3p.m., the Legislature’s Executive Board will review summer study proposals. Potential topics include the state brand board, cryptocurrency, state sales tax exemptions, weather anomalies and expanding in-state meat production, among many others.
Rhoden signed over 200 bills into law this session.
Today also marks the conclusion of South Dakota’s 100th legislative session. A private program, reception and dance for former lawmakers, interns, staff and pages will be held in Pierre April 12.
