The Pierre Lady Governors will finally take the diamond on Tuesday night in Mitchell to begin the 2025 softball season. They were originally scheduled to begin play April 1 at home against Aberdeen Christian, but weather postponed that matchup to later this month. The Kernels of Mitchell are 0-2 so far this spring, falling to Sioux Falls Jefferson 17-7, and to defending state champion Sioux Falls Lincoln 18-2.
In two head-to-head matchups in 2024, Mitchell won both of their games against Pierre. Those scores went 11-3 and 9-7. That was part of a 3-19 campaign for the Govs, where they lost to eventual runner-up Harrisburg in the SoDak 16.
This year’s roster includes five seniors, and returns their top production. Noel Kist, who pitched in 15 of the team’s 22 games and was second on the team in hits, is back for a final season. So is Elly Broers, who led the team in 2024 with a .395 batting average.
Game one of the season starts at 6 p.m. central in Mitchell on Tuesday. Pierre’s home opener is Thursday afternoon at 4 against Yankton.
