The Walworth County Commission ended up in an executive session during their regular meeting on Tuesday, May 6th, after County Auditor Kim Dills asked for clarification on the County personnel policy regarding travel approval. Dills told the commissioners that if travel is not approved by the commissioners, she should not have to reimburse for meals and travel. Walworth County States Attorney Sarah Malsom informed the commission of the law.
Commissioner Scott Schilling said the commissioners should be made aware of travel, regardless of the law.
Walworth County Register of Deeds Brenda DeToy did not appreciate the negative light being cast on all elected officials and their deputies if the issue is with individuals.
Malsom advised the commissioners not to go against codified law.
The commission then went into executive session on the matter. When they came out of the session, Commissioner Justin Jungwirth stated their agreement.
Auditor Dills also brought up company vehicle usage and mileage. Her question was if a vehicle is available for travel but an employee chooses not to use it, do they still get paid mileage. States Attorney Malsom said the mileage rate depends on availability of the vehicle.
Other highlights from the commission meeting:
- Register of Deeds Brenda DeToy presented her monthly report and said she is now taking applications for a deputy in her office;
- The commissioners approved the Bridge Improvement Grant bid, which will now go to the DOT for approval;

- Several abatements were approved;
- Liquor licenses were approved for Bridge City Marina and Resort, Hoven Country Club, and Mudline Adventures/New Evarts Resort.
Auditor Dills had the county’s total in her monthly report.
