A study found giving your teenager your old car isn’t the smartest move, and not just because they can’t drive a stick. It could be a DEADLY decision.
Teens in cars that are more than five years old are 19% more likely to die in a fatal crash. For cars over 15 years old, it jumps to 31%.
It’s because new drivers suck at it for a while, and new cars have a lot more safety features. Things like side airbags and emergency braking.
Giving your kid your old car is a popular move for parents, because it usually means YOU get a new car. Plus, you don’t care as much if they’re in a fender bender, or spill Mountain Dew Code Red on the seat.
But according to the study, it’s a safer call to give your KID the new car. Or, maybe just trade the old one in for something that rolled off the production line after 2020.
