Lightning strike believed to be what started fire at a home in Pierre Wednesday night

A lightning strike is thought to be the cause of a residential structure fire last night (May 14, 2025) in Pierre.

Pierre Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ian Paul says the call came around 10:30pm to the 1400 block of East Broadway Avenue.

Paul says it was raining while they worked to put the fire out.

Paul says the family of two living in the home was displaced, but they did have somewhere to go.
