A Hughes County Sheriff’s Office deputy has graduated (June 6, 2025) from the state Law Enforcement Training Academy with top honors.
Out of a class of 36 local, state and tribal cadets, Deputy Sheriff Jacen Hankock received the Coler-Williams Award. According to a post on the Hughes County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, the recognition is presented to the top recruit in each academy class. The award is named as a memorial to FBI Special Agents Jack Coler and Ronald Williams who were killed in the line of duty in 1975.
The course is required for the students to become fully qualified law enforcement officers in South Dakota. Graduates complete 520 hours of course work that includes instruction in the law, arrest control tactics, firearms, vehicle handling and criminal investigations. The training program is taught by full-time staff from the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation and adjunct instructors from law enforcement agencies across the state.
