A 31 year old Pierre man was arrested in connection with a single-vehicle rollover crash that occurred Tuesday afternoon (June 10, 2025) near Beastrom Road, east of Pierre.
Hughes County Sheriff Patrick Callahan says his office received a call reporting the accident just after 3pm. Witnesses at the scene reported seeing an individual walking away from the crashed vehicle, so a coordinated search of the area was initiated by Hughes County Sheriff’s Deputies, the Pierre Police Department and the South Dakota Highway Patrol. Approximately 30 minutes later, law enforcement located James R. Cowman hiding in a nearby grove of trees. He was transported by AMR ambulance to the Pierre hospital for evaluation before being booked into the Hughes County Jail.
Cowman was charged with Driving Under the Influence, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, and Obstructing an Officer, among other charges.
Callahan says the successful and swift apprehension of the suspect was the direct result of excellent inter-agency cooperation. He says he’s “grateful for the prompt response and assistance from our partners at the Pierre Police Department, the South Dakota Highway Patrol, Pierre AMR, and Hughes County Emergency Management, which ensured the safety of the public and the quick resolution of this incident.”
The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
