The new Lt. Cmdr. John C. Waldron Memorial Bridge over the Missouri River between Pierre and Fort Pierre has been open since late last year (Nov. 2024) and work continues to tear down the previous structure.
The massive girders supporting the old bridge were brought down by a controlled explosion back in March (March 17, 2025). Since then, the contractor has been bringing the pieces back up out of the Missouri River and hauling them away.
According to the Pierre-Fort Pierre Bridge website, new infrastructure is taking shape. Under-bridge lighting has been installed, enhancing both the safety and visual appeal of the area. On the roadway, crews are completing the installation of the final highway lights.
Pedestrian access is improving as sidewalk construction continues along the north side of the road on the Pierre side of the bridge. On the Fort Pierre side of the bridge, crews have started grading work for the future plaza area. Additionally, painting of the barrier walls and abutments is underway, putting the finishing touches on this phase of the project.
