According to the 2024 Drinking Water Report, Pierre has good quality water.
Water Superintendent Robert Townley says they test for 90 potential contaminants.
Townley says they’ve made some infrastructure improvements in the past year that help maintain good water quality.
Over the past year, Townley says Pierre has implemented a new water metering system.
Government regulations require testing for numerous water contaminants annually. The 2024 test results are based on a series of water samples conducted throughout the year at a variety of locations within the Pierre water system. The Water Report was included with the June city utility bill mailing. Customers can also find copies at Rawlins Municipal Library, Pierre City Hall and online at cityofpierre.org.
Pierre serves more than 13,640 customers who use an average of 2.6 million gallons of water each day. Pierre’s water comes from the Missouri River. It’s then treated at the city’s drinking water treatment facility and then distributed to customers.
The federal Environmental Protection Agency and the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources mandate the city test its drinking water annually for contaminants and share the results with the public.
