24 inmates have been indicted on charges in connection with the May 27, 2025, disturbance at the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls.
Attorney General Marty Jackley said the 24 inmates were indicted on either felony or misdemeanor charges including Aggravated Assault, Simple Assault, and Rioting. He said the assaults resulted in 14 inmates being injured, with four having been transported to Sioux Falls hospitals.
Jackley said the defendants orchestrated violent assaults that endangered both inmates and staff. He said court appearances for the defendants will be scheduled at a later date.
The Attorney General’s Office will prosecute the cases. Depending on each individual inmate’s involvement, the maximum sentence is up to 80 years in prison.

The cases were investigated by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation and the South Dakota Department of Corrections Office of the Inspector General.
The defendants are presumed innocent under the U.S. Constitution.
