The South Dakota Highway Patrol is urging all drivers to prioritize safety on the road over the Fourth of July holiday.
Highway Patrol Superintendent Colonel Casey Collins says the Fourth of July is traditionally a time for celebration and travel, but it also brings a higher risk of crashes and traffic-related incidents. To combat this, he says state troopers will be highly visible and actively engaged in enforcement efforts, focusing on impaired driving, speeding and seatbelt usage to help everyone reach their destinations and celebrations safely.
Key Safety Tips for Drivers:
- Slow Down: Observe speed limits and adjust speed according to road conditions.
- Stay Alert: Avoid distractions such as texting, eating, or using in-car technologies while driving.
- Drive Sober: Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Designate a sober driver or use alternative transportation.
- Buckle Up: Ensure that all passengers are wearing seatbelts at all times.
- Plan Ahead: Allow extra time for travel, anticipate delays, and be patient with other drivers.
Collins says the SDHP is committed to keeping the roads safe and reducing traffic-related injuries and fatalities. He says by following these safety tips and remaining vigilant, we can all contribute to a safer holiday travel experience.
