The City of Pierre is expanding its recycling program to now include alkaline batteries.
City Commissioner Jamie Huizenga says recycling alkaline batteries is in addition to the lithium-ion rechargeable batteries they’ve been able to recycle for some time.
The alkaline or lithium batteries have to be under 300 watts to be eligible for recycling. As for the lithium batteries commonly found on many disposable or rechargeable vapes, the battery can be recycled but there can’t be any nicotine on it. You MUST pull the vape apart and bring only the battery in for recycling.
There are no drop-off fees for batteries. Just bring them inside at the Solid Waste Baling Facility on East Park Street during normal operating hours.
Solid Waste Manager Val Keller says it’s a priority to keep these materials out of the landfill. She says the city is willing to absorb some of the cost to extend the use of the landfill and prevent contaminates from entering the environment.
Keller says there’s no fee for city utility customers to drop off things like aluminum cans and yard waste. She says drop-off fees for items such as concrete and wood pallets are determined by weight.
Keller says other items that can be recycled in Pierre include paint, household chemicals, cell phones, light bulbs, electronics, cardboard, aluminum, tin, some plastics, paper, yard waste and some construction material. Other items– including paint and household chemicals– are part of a supply swap program. People can donate paint or chemicals they no longer need or they can take materials someone else has donated.
