The South Dakota State Archives will reopen to the public next week.
State Historian Ben Jones says more than 17,000 bankers’ boxes, maps, and other items documenting our state’s history, along with many of the museum’s artifacts, were carefully stored at Pierre’s Northridge Plaza while the Cultural Heritage Center renovation was underway. These documents and artifacts are now all safely back in the CHC, with many of them stored on new high- density shelving. The added storage and the physical renovations extend the life of the Cultural Heritage Center for another generation or two. He says they hope to see researchers back in the new public research room beginning on July 7, 2025.
Meanwhile, the museum exhibit redesign continues with an expected public opening date in the summer of 2026.
