The Twins were certainly happy to turn the page on the month of June. The team saw just nine victories in June while also seeing a lot of hard work evaporate in front of their eyes. The Twins had worked their way up to second place in the AL Central and positioned them in striking distance of the first place Detroit Tigers who have been one of the hottest teams in the MLB this season. The Twins got as close as 4 games back of the Tigers, and felt like they were right where they wanted to be going into last month. But June scrapped all of that, the Twins fell as far as fourth in the division, and fell a few games under .500, a record they had worked tirelessly to shift in their favor.
Maybe July would bring a rejuvenated Twins team down to Miami to take on an equally as woeful Marlins team before coming home for a long homestand? Well, that wasn’t the case in game one of the series on July 1st. The Twins lost 2-0, only tallying two total hits and seeing an outcome very similar to the one they had experienced so often. But maybe last night’s win to even up the series is what the Twins might need to shift the momentum back in their direction.
The Twins scored one run in the first inning and one in the fourth inning to win the game by one run (2-1), winning their first one-run decision since late May. The Twins offense would get a sacrifice fly off the bat of Brooks Lee in the first to bring home Byron Buxton, which was answered by a Kyle Stowers solo-homerun to even the game up at one apiece. The winning run would come via a Carlos Correa RBI single that scored Willi Castro, and that would be all they needed to get the win. On the bump, Simeon Woods-Richardson would earn his fourth win of the season throwing 5.0 IP allowing three hits.
The Twins can win the series this afternoon in their 11:10 AM CT start with Miami, sending David Festa out on the mound to try and get it done. You can listen to this game on KGFX 1060 AM or 103.1 FM in the Pierre area.
