One of the best ways to kick off 4th of July has been in Fort Pierre with the annual 4 on the 4th race. For 12 years, competitors have gathered in front of the Silver Spur alongside the Fort Pierre Fire Department to run throughout the town before coming across the finish line in front of Maier Meats. Over the years, the numbers of runners has grown into the hundreds, and it steadily gains more and more traction each year.
On a warm morning, the runners took off in front of a steadily growing crowd of parade goers who cheered on the runners before they made the loop back. While the numbers of contestants continues to change each year, the winners of the race surely hasn’t. This year, we again saw the brother/sister combo of Jared and Jessica Lutmer blow away the rest of the field and come in first like we saw last year. The women’s field saw Jessica Lutmer complete the race and come across as the first female finisher with a time of 25 minutes, 23 seconds. Second was taken by Mason Berg with a time of 27:47 and Kathryn Summer came in third with a time of 29:17. All three pictured below.

For the men’s heat, it was Jared Lutmer who was the first runner to cross the finish line with a time of 21:16, Daniel Mason a few minutes behind with a time of 24:42 and Trent Erickson finishing third 24:48.

The 4 on the 4th continues to be one of Fort Pierre and Pierre residents favorite traditions to start their fourth by getting some exercise before taking on a day full of food, drinks and fun. We will see if anyone can dethrone the Lutmers in 2026!
