A public meeting on the jail study results was held Wednesday (July 9th) in the courtroom at the Walworth County Courthouse in Selby. All five commissioners and several county residents were in attendance to hear the presentation for a new jail in Walworth County. Members of the jail study panel at the meeting included Kevin Hall – Director of the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation and retired Pennington County Sheriff; Rob Yantis – former Pennington County Jail Administrator and current Policy & Operations Manager at the National Institute for Jail Operations; Quinn Reimers – sitting in for Toby Morris – of Colliers Securities in Pierre; and Dean Marske – President of HKG Architects in Aberdeen. Hall said a new functional jail would enable the County to “control its own destiny”.
The recommendation of the experts is that the new jail be located in Mobridge, citing proximity to medical and food availability. They recommend it be built as a 32-bed facility with room for expansion, so that male, female, and juvenile inmates can all be housed and cared for properly and with regard to mental health. The panel gave a time frame of two-and-a-half years if they were to begin working on the project right now. They also suggested that boarding out-of-county inmates be put on hold temporarily upon completion of construction to allow time for the new facility to operate efficiently.
