The Zap and Hasting Sodbusters both sit atop the ILB in terms of standings, but Hastings knew they were coming to Hyde Stadium to take on the hottest team in the league for a crucial series in terms of playoff seeding. The Zap sit in first place in the league, and are jockeying for the final playoff spot at the end of the season, so wins against a high-caliber team like Hastings are crucial for their cause.
Patient at-bats by the Zap put runners on early, and they brought two runs across in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Brady Glenn got the start and hit an early groove, giving up just one run on three hits through his five innings of work. The Zap would open up the lead in the fifth inning scoring 4 runs to take a 6-1 lead. In that productive fifth, Jared Pugrad put a ball in play with bases loaded that would be thrown to home and get away from Sodbuster catcher Weston Johnston to score two of their four runs in the frame.
The Sodbusters would answer with two more runs in the top of the sixth before a lightning delay would put the game on pause for about a half an hour. But not even mother nature could subdue the Zap offense as Vince Polizzi would drive in an insurance run in the eighth to make it 7-3. The Zap bullpen made up of Wyatt Gladue and Connor Van Luchen would come up big for the home team holding Hastings scoreless in the final three innings to get a huge first win of the series, setting the tone and the stage for today’s doubleheader.
It is Kids Day at the ballpark today for the doubleheader, with game one beginning at 1:00 PM CT and game two beginning about a half an hour after game one concludes.
