Throughout the month of July, the Oahe Zap and Casper Spuds have been battling for the final postseason spot in the ILB. Both teams have been winning at a very high rate, running on a collision course with each other that came to formation this week in their four game series at Hyde Stadium. The Spuds took two of the first three games of the series over the weekend, setting up a must-win situation for the Zap who needed a win in the final game of the series to essentially keep their playoff hopes alive.
The game started off with Zap’s Wyatt Gladue only needing seven pitches to get through the first inning, turning it over to the Zap offense who had been cruising, and they continued that trend scoring the first run of the game to take a 1-0 lead. The Spuds would answer in the fourth inning with a run of their own, tying the game at 1-1. In the fourth inning, the weather rolled in and forced an immediate delay with lightning in the area. Storms with 80+ mph winds rolled across Hyde Stadium turning over tables and scattering debris all over the ballpark. After a lengthy delay, the game got back underway just before 10 PM with high wind gusts still blowing around the area. But that would not slow down the Zap offense, who loaded the bases and got a bases clearing double from catcher Mason Lang to blow the game wide open.
The Zap would get two more runs on some errors by the Spuds infield, putting them in front 7-2. Zap reliever Hudson Ivey would pitch multiple great innings of relief and set the Zap up to get the win in the ninth inning. The Spuds would make it interesting, scoring three runs in the ninth cutting the deficit to two, but Ivey got Matt Marsic to flyout to deep left for the final out and secure the win for Oahe.
With this crucial win, the Zap jump back into first place in the ILB, and essentially control their own destiny after splitting the series with Casper. The Zap will now take the off day today before welcoming the Freemont Moo in for a three game series which will get underway on Wednesday night. First pitch will be at 6:05 PM CT at Hyde Stadium with coverage beginning at 5:55 PM CT on River 92.7 and DRGnews.com.
