The South Dakota Legislature’s State-Tribal Relations Legislative Committee will hold its first meeting of the 2025 Interim Session Thursday (July 31, 2025) at 1pm CT at the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate Headquarters in Agency Village.
The meeting will be co-chaired by Representative Will Mortenson of Fort Pierre and Senator Michael Rohl of Aberdeen. The committee will hear tribal police, county law enforcement, the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, and the South Dakota Highway Patrol present their perspectives on public safety. Public comment will also be taken.

In addition to Mortenson and Rohl, committee members include Representatives Heather Baxter (R-Rapid City), Eric Emery (D-Rosebud), Scott Odenbach (R-Spearfish), and Peri Pourier (D-Pine Ridge); and Senators Red Dawn Foster (D-Pine Ridge), Tamara Grove (R-Lower Brule), Sam Marty (R-Prairie City), and Jamie Smith (D-Sioux Falls).
The committee is an ongoing statutory committee created in 1993 by SDCL sections 2-6-20 to 2-6-23, inclusive, as a part of the state’s reconciliation efforts. The statute directs the committee to make a continuing study of the relations between the state and its political subdivisions and the tribes and their tribal governments.
