Three grueling days of golf at Brookings Country Club saw hundreds of amateur golfers from around the state battle it out for the Amateur Championship, and Pierre along with Fort Pierre had good representation on the final leaderboard after all scorecards came in.
From Fort Pierre, Luke Olson continued his great summer of golf by firing the lowest Sunday round of 64 and finishing solo seventh with a combined score of two-under par for the weekend. Pierre’s Michael Keeton finished his weekend with an even-par, 72, ending up tied for 12th with three other players. Keeton would finish +6 for the three-day tournament. Also from Pierre and on the women’s side, Natalie Young would shoot a 75, 78 and an 82 to finish her weekend in solo eighth position out of 21 talented players.
On the men’s side, Watertown’s Jake Olson would win the championship with a gross score of -9, one ahead of Luke Honner out of Sioux Falls. On the women’s side, McKenzie Mages out of Sioux Falls would run away with the title on Sunday, shooting a 68 and finishing six-strokes ahead of her nearest competitor.
