Celebrating and Connecting Through Dakota Floral and Baseball
Designed by artist Shalene Foote, a member of the Prairie Island Indian Community, the unique hat and bat honor the revered tradition of Dakota floral, or Yuhaha – a visual representation of the relationship that our ancestors built with the land and, specifically, plants. Shades of green, yellow, red, orange, purple and blue create a vibrant tapestry reflective of the native flora and berries cherished by the Dakota. Inspired by the thread of Yuhaha through generations of Dakota art, Shalene’s work beautifully connects baseball, the Twins and Target Field to Minnesota’s indigenous roots.
“The Minnesota Twins are honored to celebrate our state’s Dakota heritage through our longstanding partnership with the Prairie Island Indian Community,” said Nancy O’Brien, Twins Senior Vice President, Community Engagement. “Our state’s varied landscapes, made more beautiful and vital by native plants, is unifying for many Minnesotans – as is the joy of Twins baseball. We are thankful to Shalene for her extraordinary representation of Dakota floral art, we are grateful for our partners at Treasure Island Resort & Casino, and we are excited to welcome fans to Target Field for Native American Heritage Night on August 9.”
“We are incredibly proud of Shalene and grateful for the opportunity to showcase her artistic talents and shine a bright light on our Dakota culture,” said Grant Johnson, Prairie Island Indian Community Tribal Council President. “Native American Heritage Night is a special night, and we are so appreciative that the Minnesota Twins are committed to creating this unique spotlight that allows us to show people what it means to be Dakota.”
