Before we dive into the way last night’s game ended, we should tip our caps to the Sioux Falls little league squad who represented South Dakota with pride in the Little League World Series. It is incredibly difficult for a team to make it to the regional championship, let alone the World Series in Williamsport. You have to elevate your play to an elite level, and Sioux Falls did just that. They delivered us a run that we won’t soon forget, so congratulations to the guys from Sioux Falls for making this dream run in the little league summer classic.
South Dakota and South Carolina battled for most of the game, with South Dakota taking an early 1-0 lead that would stand until the sixth inning. Just one out away from advancing to the semifinals, South Carolina would load the bases and were able to bring the tying run across. A pop-out would end the inning, but delivered new life for South Carolina who hadn’t been able to generate any offense for most of the day.
South Dakota would answer in a big way in extra-innings, bringing across five runs in the top of the seventh to take a commanding 6-1 lead. However, South Carolina would persevere and string together a host of hits to ultimately whittle the deficit down to one run, and then score the winning runs on a base hit that would drive in the game tying and winning run. South Carolina completed the comeback and won it 7-6.
It will certainly be a loss that will linger for Sioux Falls, but hopefully once the dust settles the boys will realize what an incredible experience they were able to partake in. If history is any guide to what’s to come, Sioux Falls will almost certainly be back in this position again in the coming years.
