Sept. 10, 2025:
Pierre City Utility customers could see an increase in cost next year.
Finance Officer Lacey Walz says the 2026 budget approved by commissioners this week (Sept. 9, 2025) includes a 5% increase in the usage fee.
Walz says there are projects from 2025 that will carry over into 2026.
Walz says they used moderate numbers for projected tax revenue estimates.
Walz says the 2026 budget totals just over $73 million, about $12 million more than the 2025 budget. She says that’s due, in part, to large projects such as:
-
Lt. Cmdr. John C. Waldron Memorial Bridge Plaza improvements,
-
a new ladder truck for the Pierre Volunteer Fire Department,
-
the Euclid Avenue water line project,
-
the Wastewater Final Clarifier and
-
an electrical improvement project.

Aug. 26, 2025:
Pierre City commissioners, administrators and department heads are holding a series of budget work sessions to put together a preliminary 2026 budget.
City Administrator Kristi Honeywell says they primarily work with three different revenue funds. One, is the general fund.
Honeywell says the enterprise fund covers electric, water, wastewater and stormwater drainage.
The third revenue fund is the subsidized enterprise fund.
Honeywell says in past years, Pierre city officials have budgeted conservatively.
Honeywell says there are projects from 2025 that will carry over into 2026.
She says there are also three “must do” projects.
Honeywell says the Pierre City Commission will give the 2026 budget a first reading at their Sept. 2, 2025, meeting. Final approval of the budget must be done before the end of that month.
