The summer months are fleeting, but the heat is not. Pierre and Yankton experienced that firsthand with yesterdays doubleheader that was held at a hot Hollister Field. The games original start times had to be pushed back a full hour due to the heat, and even then players were still battling the steamy conditions.
In the girls game, the Govs and Gazelles battled back and forth for most of the match, neither team really giving an inch. Then all of a sudden, the Govs struck twice within two minutes taking a 2-0 lead that they would not surrender. The first goal came from Natalie Flottmeyer who received the pass from Cameron Larson to put the Govs out front in the 61st minute. Moments later, Sophia Brueggeman added some insurance off the assist of Lexi Hillmer to make it 2-0. The Governor girls would play shutdown defense the remainder of the match and earn the win.
In the boys game, the Govs would earn a draw and get a huge performance out of one of their key leaders Caiden Ahartz who scored one of the two Governor goals and assisted on the other. The boys would earn the draw (2-2) and walk away exhausted but “OK” with the outcome. Head coach Sean Blanchette would have obviously been thrilled with a win, but was pleased with the way his team battled through the elements and persevered throughout the match.
