Aug. 22, 2025:
Beginning Monday (Aug. 25, 2025), asphalt concrete surfacing will be placed on the recently completed grading project on U.S. Highway 12 between Morristown and Watauga.
Additionally, five miles of Highway 12 and approximately one and one-half miles of S.D. Highway 65 east of McIntosh will also be resurfaced with asphalt concrete.
The South Dakota Department of Transportation says traffic will be controlled with flaggers and a pilot car during working hours. Motorists can expect delays of up to 15 minutes. The road will be open to normal two-way traffic during non-working hours.
The overall project completion date for this $5.36 million project is Nov. 21, 2025.
May 15, 2025:
The work zone on U.S. Highway 12 between Morristown and Watauga in Corson County is currently closed (May 15, 2025) due to extremely wet conditions.
The South Dakota Department of Transportation says the highway is impassable and will remain closed until weather conditions improve. Dirt grade must be dried to a stable condition before reopening.
Flaggers are in place at the Highway 12 and S.D. Highway 73 junction near Thunderhawk and also at McIntosh, redirecting traffic onto other State highways. Weather dependent, the Highway 12 closure is anticipated to be in place for multiple days.
This 9.5 mile, $23.6 million multi-year construction project involves the complete reconstruction of Highway 12, including the replacement of the narrow bridge one mile east of Morristown. The overall project completion date is August 2025.
