Pierre Street Department workers are doing chip seal project on select streets throughout the community. While work is underway, drivers should plan for minor delays, but there won’t be any road closures associated with this project.
Chip sealing is a proven, cost-effective maintenance method used to extend the life of paved streets. The process involves applying a thin layer of oil followed by a layer of rock chips. This treatment helps to:
- Seal and protect the pavement from water intrusion and weather damage
- Slow down cracking and pothole formation
- Improve roadway safety by restoring surface texture and skid resistance
- Stretch tax dollars further by preserving roads before major reconstruction is necessary
Investing in chip seal work means people can expect:
- Smoother driving conditions once the project is complete
- Longer-lasting streets with fewer large-scale repairs needed
- Lower overall costs for street maintenance over time
The City of Pierre thanks residents for their patience during the 2025 construction season.
