There were questions if the game would even be played as the rain pounded the capitol city and the lightning continuously lit up the night sky. The storms rolled in about an hour prior to kickoff and just hung out over Hollister Field. Around 9:00 PM CT, the lightning finally made it’s way out of the area, but the rain stayed steady. Pierre and Aberdeen finally got the clearance to kick and got underway just shy of 9:30 PM as games around the state wrapped up.
The weather mirrored the play in the first half, very bogged down and tough to move. Late in the second quarter, the Govs forced a punt from deep in Aberdeen territory and set themselves up inside Golden Eagle territory. After a few positive plays, with :01 left on the clock in the first half, Logan Witte bombed a 30-yard field goal to send the Govs into the halftime break up 3-0
Much of the same in the second half, dropped passes, dropped snaps and difficulty fielding the football. That is, until Carter Schiefelbein broke loose up the Golden Eagle sideline and sprinted his way 96-yards to the opposite end-zone, giving the game its first touchdown and giving Pierre a 9-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles would answer with a score of their own to make it 9-6, and would put themselves in position late in the fourth quarter to drive down and win the game. Good defense by the Govs and a false start by Aberdeen would put them in a 4th & 9, which Pierre would stop and go on to win the game 9-6.
The Govs start the season with a win, moving to 1-0 after the boxing match, and look ahead to week two when they will go on the road to take on Huron next Friday night at 7 PM CT. Coverage will begin at 6:30 PM CT with Brian Oakland on River 92.7 and streaming on DRGnews.com.
