A stark difference in weather from Saturday’s doubleheader to Tuesday’s saw the Govs and Arrows face off on a warm and windy day at home. The Govs were coming off a strong weekend of soccer where they took two from the RC Central Cobblers, one of which was a three-goal comeback by the girls facilitated in the final eight or so minutes. The boys played first and faced an Arrows team that possessed immense amounts of speed and talent, and that speed put Watertown out in front early with a lone goal by Zane Fligge. But if there is one coaching staff that is great at making halftime adjustments, it’s Sean Blanchette and his staff.
Blanchette admittedly felt fortunate to only be trailing by one goal after a first half that was controlled by the Arrows, but the second half was a completely different story as the Govs dominated the time of possession and put an immense amount of pressure on the Watertown defense. Jacoby LaRoche scored the Govs first goal and opened the flood gates as they would add three more in the second half thanks to Alex Oedekoven, LaRoche again and Everett Norton. Maybe the play of the game came late in the match when the Arrows earned a penalty kick trailing by two goals. Carter Templeton made an outstanding save that got the entire bench on their feet, but Templeton was not done there. He would clear it the near distance of the pitch and found Everett Norton on the other end who placed one perfectly in the back of the net. Blanchette in the postgame was pleased with a lot in their 4-1 victory, but maybe most pleased with the fact that his goalkeeper found his way onto the offensive stat sheet with an assist.
In game two the Governor girls were met with an equally difficult task as the Watertown girls had just as much speed and talent as their counterparts. The Governor girls struck first with a Lexie Hillmer goal, but were immediately answered with a Katie Fischer goal for the Arrows. Lexie Hillmer took control of the match, scoring two more goals to complete the hat-trick and help her team to the 3-2 victory to hold their spot at the top of the 11AA standings.
Both teams will be back in action on Saturday when they go on the road to Spearfish for a doubleheader.
