The best months for most people to get a flu shot are September and October
This timing allows your body two weeks to build up protective antibodies before the flu season typically ramps up in the U.S., which starts in October and peaks from December to February. While it’s ideal to get vaccinated by the end of October, it is still beneficial to get the shot later in the season if you haven’t already.
In South Dakota, you can get a flu shot at your doctor’s office or through clinics at healthcare providers like Avera Health, Sanford Health, and Horizon Health Care. You can also find them at many retail pharmacies including CVS, Walgreens, Hy-Vee and Lewis Drug.
Flu shots are often free through your health insurance, which typically covers them as preventive care. Medicaid generally pays for flu shots with no out-of-pocket costs for beneficiaries. Federal law guarantees this coverage for adults and children, though the specific process can differ depending on your age and where you get the shot.
If you don’t have insurance, you can still get a flu shot at a low cost.
