Don Haggar has announced (Sept. 1, 2025) his candidacy for the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission.
A lifelong South Dakotan, Haggar says he “brings decades of practical business experience and a well-respected tenure within the state legislature to the race.”
As Public Utilities Commissioner, Haggar is committed to these priorities for South Dakota:
- Affordable Utilities: With decades of business experience, Haggar understands how to protect families and job creators from rising energy costs. That’s why Haggar will fight to keep utility costs low by opposing costly mandates and overregulation.
- Abundant Energy: Haggar supports cutting red tape and encouraging investment in our energy sources to make energy more abundant and accessible.
- Reliable Power: South Dakotans should be able to count on their power – Haggar will make sure they can. Haggar will support strengthening infrastructure to handle peak demand and extreme weather by prioritizing grid stability and smart investments to prevent blackouts.
Through his experience in real estate, banking and insurance, Haggar says he developed a deep understanding of what it takes to support South Dakota families and businesses. Additionally, while serving in the state legislature, he says his leadership earned the respect of his colleagues and resulted in Haggar’s selection as Speaker Pro Tempore.
Haggar: “As your next Public Utilities Commissioner, I will prioritize an all-of-the-above strategy to make sure our utilities are more affordable, more abundant, and more reliable for South Dakota’s families. I am ready to bring my experience, leadership, and passion for South Dakota to the Public Utilities Commission.”
