Sept. 7, 2025:
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Powerball players in Missouri and Texas won the nearly $1.8 billion jackpot on Saturday (Sept. 6, 2025), overcoming astronomical odds to end the lottery game’s three-month drought without a big winner.
The winning numbers were 11, 23, 44, 61, and 62, with the Powerball number being 17.
The winning ticket in Texas was sold at a gas station-convenience store in Fredericksburg, according to the Texas Lottery.
The $1.787 billion prize, which was the second-largest U.S. lottery jackpot in history, followed 41 consecutive drawings in which no one matched all six numbers. The last drawing with a jackpot winner happened May 31.
Powerball’s terrible odds of 1 in 292.2 million are designed to generate big jackpots, with prizes growing as they roll over when no one wins. Lottery officials note that the odds are far better for the game’s many smaller prizes. There are three drawings each week.
Each ticket holder will have the choice between an annuitized prize of $893.5 million or a lump sum payment of $410.3 million. Both prize options are before taxes. If a winner selects the annuity option, they will receive one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5% each year. Powerball tickets cost $2, and the game is offered in 45 states plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Sept. 4, 2025, update:
(DRG Media Group)- A Powerball with Power Play ticket worth $100,000 in Wednesday night’s drawing was sold in Fargo.
It won by matching four white balls and the Powerball. The winning numbers were 3, 16, 29, 61, 69, and the Powerball was 22. The Power Play multiplier was 2.
The North Dakota Lottery says the lucky ticket was sold at Don’s Car Wash, 2500 52nd Ave S, in Fargo. The prize was $50,000, but because the player had also purchased the Power Play option, the ticket is worth $100,000. Don’s Car Wash will receive a $2,000 bonus for selling the winning Powerball ticket. The holder of the winning ticket must claim their prize at the North Dakota Lottery office within 180 days of the draw.
“The billion-dollar Powerball jackpot run has created a lot of excitement for players as well as a couple of big wins,” said Thomas Lawler, Attorney General’s Office Director of the North Dakota Lottery. “In addition to this six-figure Powerball win, North Dakota also had a $50,000 Powerball winner on August 23. Powerball has shared its luck with other games, as we also had a Lucky for Life $25,000 a year for life winner in early August.”
Sept. 4, 2025:
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Powerball jackpot has jumped to an eye-popping $1.7 billion, after yet another drawing passed without a big winner Wednesday (Sept. 3, 2025).
The numbers selected were: 3, 16, 29, 61 and 69, with the Powerball number being 22.
Since May 31, 2025, there have been 41 straight drawings without a big winner.
The next drawing will be Saturday night, with the prize expected to be the third-largest in U.S. lottery history.
Powerball’s terrible odds of 1 in 292.2 million are designed to generate big jackpots, with prizes becoming ever larger as they repeatedly roll over when no one wins. Lottery officials note that the odds are far better for the game’s many smaller prizes. There are three drawings each week.
The estimated $1.4 billion jackpot from Wednesday night’s drawing would have been for a winner who had opted to receive 30 payments over 29 years through an annuity. Winners almost always choose the game’s cash option, which would have been an estimated $634.3 million.
Powerball tickets cost $2 and the game is offered in 45 states plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
