The Pierre girls and Harrisburg faced off in a #1 vs. #2 game as both teams sat atop the standings with no losses and six wins. The Govs held just a few more seeding points placing them a nose ahead of Harrisburg in the standings, but the Govs knew this would be a tough test regardless of where the two teams stood. Harrisburg had yet to surrender a goal in their six games of action, holding every single one of their opponents scoreless to this point in the season.
Harrisburg would add an early goal thanks to Taylor Syverson paying off a great pass from Nyah Aware. The game would sit 1-0 with multiple opportunities for Pierre spoiled by good Tiger defense. The Tigers would add a second goal thanks to Auburn Barrett, and would hold onto the 2-0 victory to keep their scoreless streak alive. The Tigers move to 7-0-0 and the Govs move to 6-1-1.
In the boys game, while the Tigers had lost their last five games, the results of those games showed that the Tigers were competitive in each loss. Miles Wright for the Tigers would score the games first goal giving Harrisburg a 1-0 lead. The Governor offense felt out of sorts for most of the match, never seeming to find that steady rhythm they’re so used to. It felt like the Tigers were going to pull the upset until the 76th minute when a whistle blew for an apparent hand-ball inside the box, setting up a penalty kick for Pierre’s Jacoby LaRoche. LaRoche would put it in the lower right hand pocket of the goal, a perfectly placed kick to even the match at 1-1. The game would end in a draw, the Govs moving to 4-2-3 and the Tigers moving to 1-5-1.
The Govs will hit the road and head to Brandon Valley this weekend for an afternoon doubleheader getting underway at noon. The next soccer coverage on River 92.7 will come Monday for a Governor Girls makeup against Rapid City Stevens.
