Today (Sept. 19, 2025) is POW/MIA Recognition Day, a day to remember and honor the sacrifices of the nation’s prisoners of war (POWs) and those still missing in action (MIA).
Jeremiah Schneider, Secretary of the South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs, says the state currently honors six veterans still unaccounted for from the Vietnam War, 33 unaccounted for from the Korean War, and 310 still unaccounted for from World War II. He says, “We owe an enduring debt to our prisoners of war and those missing in action, and we continue to advocate tirelessly for their recovery and recognition.”
South Dakotans are encouraged to participate in local observances, display the POW/MIA flag, and support the families of these brave service members.
