South Dakota U.S. Senator Mike Rounds is continuing his efforts to “restore reliable mail service” in his home state.
Over the past year or so, the United States Postal Service has moved mail processing from some of its small facilities to larger ones.
In a letter emailed to the current Postmaster General, Rounds urged him to abide by an agreement signed by his predecessor that sought to restore reliable mail service in South Dakota because customers are facing persistent delays.
Now, Rounds says, items mailed in South Dakota are taken out-of-state to be processed.
Rounds says the challenges facing the U.S. Postal Service aren’t the fault of the employees.
Along with keeping mail that originates within South Dakota from leaving the state for processing, Rounds’ February 2025 agreement with former Postmaster General Louis DeJoy included not only keeping the Dakota Central facility in Huron open, but also making $3 million in improvements at the facility.

The mail service has gotten incredibly useless. We have to drive over 4 miles to our rural box, because the carrier doesn’t want to drive those extra 4 miles. WTF??
We have had a check for over $8000 stolen somewhere along the line of postal service, altered, forged, signed AND cashed! Yeah, our local law enforcement is really on top of that one…it has now been 3 months.
We have 3 companies that rely on mail service. this is BS.
We informed delivery so we don’t drive over 4 miles to find out the mail isn’t there yet. It ranges from 10:45 am to 6:45 pm. And our local clerks act like they’re doing us a HUGE favor by waiting on us.
Go back to the Pony Express…at least is was more dependable.
