Two successful regular seasons have come to a close for both the Pierre Governor Boys & Girls soccer programs, and now both set their sights on the postseason ahead. The boys finished the regular season with a 6-4-4 record, which placed them 11th in the AA standings. The season was a year of close matches, many in which the Govs felt they should of won, some they were happy to get out of with a draw. However, come postseason time it is win or go home, so the Govs have no room for error.
The boys will hit the road Tuesday night and head east to take on Sioux Falls Christian, a team that also finished around middle of the pack (sixth in standings) with a record of 7-4-1. The two have not played yet this season, but both match up well with each others styles of play. Govs head coach Sean Blanchette feels his team is playing some of their best soccer at this point in the year, however, saying the defensive performance they showed off in their last home game against Huron was “exactly what we want to see heading into postseason play, when it all really matters.” The Govs and Chargers will face off in the first round tomorrow at 6:30 PM CT at Sanford Crossing.
Meanwhile, a few hours west, the Governor Girls will be looking to wipe out a sour taste they have had in their proverbial mouths since almost a year ago to the day when they were upset at home by a scrappy Aberdeen Central team. It was a Golden Eagles squad that would knock off the Govs in a 1-0 shocker before going on a deep run in the playoffs, leaving Pierre stunned and distraught. However, many of the same Governor Girls that felt that pain of defeat on October 8th of 2024 will look to use that as fuel against Mitchell on October 7th of 2025 as they look to advance to the second round of the playoffs. Unlike the boys matchup, these two teams have faced each other in the regular season, the Govs beating Mitchell 2-0 in one of their 11 victories this season. We will have coverage of the girls game Tuesday beginning at 4:30 PM CT with Justin Cowart and Chris Derry on River 92.7 and streaming on DRGnews.com!
