UPDATE: Pierre Girls Soccer will play Watertown on Saturday 10/11 at 1:00 PM CT, coverage will begin on River 92.7 at 12:30 PM CT.
It was as picture perfect of an afternoon as you could script for the first round of the 11AA soccer playoffs, sunny and 65 with a very slight breeze. The Pierre Governors welcoming in the Mitchell Kernels with the Govs trying to erase a heartbreaking first-round exit a year ago. The two had met earlier in the regular season, the Govs on the winning end of the 2-0 matchup. Though as they always say, it is hard to beat a team twice.
The Kernels certainly made it difficult on the Govs in the early going, scoring the first goal of the game thanks to Rylee Jennings who stayed cool in front of the net and scored a rebound off the right post. The Govs had an answer for the Jennings goal with a Myah Fravel score off of a Natalie Flottmeyer assist to even the score at 1-1. Going into the half, the Govs seemed to have had a weight lifted off their shoulders knowing they would not be entering the second half behind.
In the second half, it was all Governors. A quick goal from Jasmine Jost gave Pierre a lead, and almost equally as quickly added another with an Allison DeMers strike. The Govs continued to play free after adding some insurance, adding two more goals to secure the victory. The fourth goal was the second of the game for Jost, and the fifth coming for Lexie Hilmer who had earned her right to score after a few beautiful corner kicks that lead to scores.
The Govs will take on the Watertown Arrows on Saturday, October 11th with the time to be determined. We will update you once a start time is officially set, coverage will again be on River 92.7 and DRGnews.com
