The Fort Pierre Volunteer Fire Department spent about 5.5 hours Wednesday afternoon and early evening (Oct. 8, 2025, 1:15-6:45pm CT) containing a hay bale fire roughly four miles west of Fort Pierre at Trails End Ranch.
Fire Chief John Luce says about 20 bales weren’t far from dry grass and a couple of structures.
Crop harvest is starting up and it’s a busy time for hunting in South Dakota, which means extra people and vehicles out in rural areas. Luce urges everyone to be cautious, because despite recent rains it’s dry out in the countryside.
Incidentally, this is National Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 5-11, 2025). This year’s theme is “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.”
As part of their educational efforts, Luce invites kids of all ages to the Fort Pierre Fire Hall Saturday afternoon from 1-4pm.
Anyone interested in learning more about becoming a volunteer firefighter with the Fort Pierre Fire Department is also welcome to stop by the fire hall Saturday afternoon.
