The Pierre Governor Girls soccer team faced off with Watertown in the second round of the postseason earlier today with hopes of advancing and keeping a successful season alive. The two teams faced off earlier in the regular season, the Govs getting the better of that matchup winning 3-2. But the postseason is different, and it is hard to beat a team twice in the same season.
The Arrows didn’t make it easy on Pierre, earning the games first goal from Khloe Landmark facilitated by a corner kick from Makenna Blank. But the Govs stayed calm and answered with a Aubrey Fischer goal to even it up at 1-1. Natalie Flottmeyer would give the Govs the lead with a score, and then moments later scoring again to add some insurance and give the Govs a firm grip on the game. One of the goals was sent in by Jasmine Jost who sent a blistering free kick into the chest of Arrow goalkeeper Madison Enstad that was put in by Flottmeyer on the rebound.
In the second half, the Arrows answered almost instantly when Olivia Dettman feathered a perfect shot in the top left corner that couldn’t have been placed any better, cutting the deficit to just one.
It seemed that Watertown might be able to mount a comeback, but Lexie Hillmer dashed all hopes with two gorgeous free kicks that both went for goals, beating Enstad on the top shelf. The Govs added another insurance goal when Myah Fravel stole a pass and went straight to the Arrow net, leaving Enstad still as a statue with a perfectly placed kick for the sixth Governor goal of the game.
The Govs won 6-2, and advanced to the semi-finals where they will face Harrisburg on the road. The game is scheduled for Tuesday at 6:15 PM CT.
