There’s no need for a deer harvest within the boundaries of South Dakota’s capitol city again this year.
The decision by Pierre’s Deer Management Task Force follows a report from Animal Control Officer Farley Zuber.
Zuber said so far in 2025, there have been 13 vehicle crashes involving deer within Pierre city limits, compared to 18 at this time last year. He said he’s received three deer-related complaints in 2025, down from five in 2024.
Zuber said most deer–vehicle collisions continue to occur in less developed areas such as along Fourth Street, Highway 83 and Highway 1804 where open fields and rolling terrain create natural wildlife corridors.
Additionally, the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department reports that statewide deer populations have been impacted by Chronic Wasting Disease and Hemorrhagic Disease (Bluetongue), contributing to a lower overall population.
The Pierre’s Deer Management Task Force is comprised of a city commissioner and nine citizens appointed by the mayor and informed by the Pierre Police Department. The Task Force was established in 2007 by the city commission to establish and administer an urban deer management program.
