The Faulkton Area Trojans had been on the losing end of their last two matchups against Sully Buttes. A gutting loss earlier this regular season on a last-second score from Wesley Wittler to Gavin Colson, and of course their sizeable loss in the Dome a year ago in the State Championship. Although, Trojan head coach Shayne Geditz felt like his team was playing their best football at this point, and it’s not always about the best team, but the team who is playing the best.
The Trojans started their vengeance tour last week against Burke last week, and continued it Thursday night against the Chargers scoring first on a Spencer Melius four-yard touchdown run. The Trojans would add the two-point conversion to take an 8-0 lead and set themselves up with grips on the game. But Chargers return man Gavin Colson immediately shifted the momentum with a punt-return for a touchdown that went about 75-yards. The Chargers could not convert the two-point play, however, they were back in the game.
The Trojans fed the Chargers a steady dose of Tristen Baloun, and Baloun would seemingly never lose yardage when he had the football. Even when the Chargers front-three would stall him out at the line, he would somehow fall forward for three or four yards. Baloun would be responsible for multiple Trojan touchdowns, but maybe their most cinematic play of the evening came when Henry Bossly faked the Wildcat run and instead found Melius up the Trojan sideline for a 49-yard touchdown connection that was bobbled by Melius but soon secured for the score.
Sully Buttes hung tough, and certainly didn’t go down without a fight. They would add two scores late in the fourth quarter thanks to some crafty Wittler footwork, some good hands by Easton Moore and an outstanding onside kick facilitated and recovered by Cooper Falkenhagen. However, the push was too little, too late for the Chargers as Faulkton was able to recover the final onside kick and run out the clock for the 32-22 win.
Faulkton Area will advance to take on the #1 seeded St. Mary’s Cardinals. The two will face off next Friday, November 7th. The time still TBD.
