After 25 years of service, Pierre Police Chief Jason Jones is retiring today (Nov. 7, 2025).
At this week’s city commission meeting, Pierre Mayor Steve Harding said Jones has been a steady leader throughout his time with the department.
Jones thanked city officials for their support over the years and said he’s confident the department is in great hands with incoming police chief Captain Dusty Pelle.

Captain Pelle will officially take on the title of Chief of the Pierre Police Department tomorrow (Nov. 8, 2025). He’s a 21-year veteran of the Pierre Police Department and has worked as a Patrol Officer, Detective, Patrol Sergeant, Detective Sergeant and Captain.
