The Herreid/Selby Area Wolverines put together an outstanding regular season as mounting 25 wins to just six losses, and they were ready to test their talent against another tough opponent in Burke as the two faced off in the SoDak 16 in Fort Pierre Tuesday night. The Wolverines came in as the 11-seed as the lady Cougars came in boasting the 6-seed. It would prove to be one of the matches of the night around the state.
The Wolverines took a crucial first-set to give them the 1-0 advantage winning it 25-18 and setting a good tempo for the match. However, Burke had been tough all season long and would answer back in dominant fashion taking set number two 25-12. It was almost as if the match had been reset in a way, as both teams had somewhat settled in after shaking off the nerves.
The third set was maybe the most exciting, both teams trading blows going point for point. Though the Wolverines would come out on top eeking out a 25-23 set three victory. With their backs against the wall, the Lady Cougars responded with another thriller, Burke coming out on top in set four 25-21 all leading to the decisive final set.
Much like the third, set five went nip and tuck again. Back and forth drama leading to set point where the Wolverines would win it 15-13 and the celebration was on.
Jordyn Rossow maybe had the match of the evening amongst players registering 21 digs and 21 kills along with six blocks. Katie Allbee likely had the play of the match with one of her three blocks being the match-winner. Brooklyn Helm had 33 digs and two aces while Alyssa Kaup matched those dig numbers but doubled those ace numbers with four.
The Wolverines advance to the State Tournament as the 8-seed and will play Chester on November 20th.
