It’s one of the most exciting times of the year. All of the brackets have come to a head, there are no pretenders left and only the best remain. Another year of the South Dakota State Football Championships in Vermillion begin this morning, and we are graced with two very intriguing matchups to kick us off.
To begin the day, Avon and S. Mary’s will clash at 11:00 AM CT in the DakotaDome. The Cardinals of St. Mary’s are 11-0 yet still feel like a slight underdog to a powerful Avon team that sits at 10-1. The Cardinal’s beat a State Championship regular in Faulkton Area by one score, while Avon handled Colman-Egan for the second straight time this year. It will be a battle of two talented rosters, and will be a great start to a great stretch of games.
In the night-cap, a similar storyline as Freeman-Marion-Freeman Academy take their undefeated record up against 10-1 Elkton-Lake Benton. The only loss for Elkton this year came at the hands of Freeman Academy earlier this year in a 42-28 boxing match. Lake Benton was one of the only teams all year long to give FMFA’s defense fits, can they do it again but come up on the winning side this time around?
