A mental health-related emergency at SDSU resulted in a campus-wide alert Saturday (Nov. 15, 2025).
The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office reports that at 11:29 a.m., multiple law enforcement and emergency response agencies were dispatched to a medical emergency near the north end of Jackrabbit Avenue on the campus of South Dakota State University. The sheriff’s office said a 71-year old man in a stopped vehicle was found to be suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Responding law enforcement officers provided medical aid until Brookings Ambulance personnel arrived at the scene. The man was taken to Brookings Hospital, stabilized and airlifted to Sioux Falls for treatment of a life-threatening injury.
SDSU issued a campus-wide alert, in accordance with established university policies. Once authorities determined the incident took place at a rural Brookings County address and there was no ongoing threat to campus, SDSU Administration cleared the alert.
In addition to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office, SDSU Police, Brookings Police and Brookings Ambulance all responded as well.
