South Dakota has opted in to the school choice initiative laid out in President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill.
During Friday’s (Nov. 14, 2025) announcement at St. Joseph Academy in Sioux Falls, Governor Larry Rhoden said parents should have the freedom to choose the learning environment that sets their kids up for success.
Information from Rhoden’s Office said beginning in January 2027, individuals could give up to $1,700 to approved scholarship organizations for a 100%, nonrefundable tax credit. The money will fund scholarships for families to use on a variety of educational purposes, including microschools and classical schools. The scholarships can also be awarded to public school students for supplemental academic enrichment.
