A new poll shows the potential of a competitive landscape in the South Dakota U.S. Senate race. Independent candidate Brian Bengs says the numbers demonstrate that voters across the political spectrum are open to new leadership.
The numbers reveal deep frustration with the status quo and real opportunity for change. Among the poll’s key findings:
-
South Dakotans disapprove of Mike Rounds’ job performance more than approve (42% disapprove vs. 40% approve).
-
South Dakotans say the country is on the wrong track (49% wrong track vs. 41% right track).
-
South Dakotans’ personal economic situations have declined (38% say their situation is worse, 24% say their situation is better).
-
Only 35% believe Sen. Rounds deserves reelection, while 48% say it’s time for someone else.
The poll also shows Bengs performing well when voters hear basic biographical information: Bengs leads Rounds 39% to 42% after positive bios, a sign that increased name recognition with a policy-driven approach will further tighten the race.
“Voters are frustrated. They are frustrated with Washington, with the economy, and with politicians who listen more to the billionaires and corporate elites than the voters they claim to represent,” Bengs said, “This poll confirms what I’ve been hearing every day: people are ready for accountability, independence, and leadership rooted in true public service, not national party politics.”
Bengs added that the numbers show a clear path to victory in 2026, “If we keep building name recognition and meeting voters where they are, this race is absolutely winnable. South Dakotans want someone who works for regular folks, not for a party machine captured by Big Money. That’s exactly the campaign we’re running.”
The survey was conducted by Public Policy Polling from 13-14 November 2025 with a sample size of 814 South Dakotans based upon a Republican +31 electorate (20% Democratic / 51% Republican / 29% Independent).
