CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The South Dakota State women’s basketball team escaped with a 59-57 win over Northern Iowa Wednesday night at the McLeod Center.
The Jackrabbits overcame a lengthy cold spell and a nine-point halftime deficit to improve to 9-2 on the season. The Panthers slip to 4-5 overall.
SDSU started the game hot, going 6-of-8 from the floor over the first five minutes to lead 18-7. All 18 of the Jackrabbits’ points to that point were from beyond the arc, 12 of which came from Maggie Hartwig.
After Hartwig’s fourth trey of the game, SDSU went just 1-of-17 to finish the first half. In that time, UNI worked back to lead 35-26 at halftime.
Brooklyn Meyer opened the second half with an and-one bucket, sparking a 10-2 run that brought the Jackrabbits back within one at 37-36. Meyer and Hilary Behrens combined for all of SDSU’s points in that stretch.
Hadley Thul gave the Jackrabbits the lead back with the first points of the fourth, then the Jacks took the lead for good on a Madison Mathiowetz triple at the 3:33 mark. Seven of SDSU’s final nine points came from the free throw line as the Jackrabbits held off the Panthers.
Hartwig finished the game as SDSU’s leading scorer for the first time this year with a season-best 16 points. Hartwig also contributed seven rebounds. Brooklyn Meyer and Madison Mathiowetz added 14 and 10 points, respectively, and had eight rebounds and four assists each. Meyer also blocked three shots.
Thul chipped in seven points on a 3-for-4 shooting night. Behrens finished with five points, three rebounds and three steals.
SDSU shot 33% for the game, compared to 38% shooting by UNI. The Panthers were led by 13 points from Elise Jaeger and 12 from Ryley Goebel. Goebel also posted 10 rebounds and five blocks.

- SDSU is now 14-5 all-time against UNI.
- Brooklyn Meyer moved into 11th place all-time for career scoring at SDSU. Now with 1,566 points, Meyer passed Karla Stevenson (1,562).
- Brooklyn Meyer moved into fourth place all-time for career blocks at SDSU. She now has 136 career blocks, passing Angie Swenson (135).
- Ellie Colbeck made the 100th appearance of her SDSU career.
