VERMILLION, S.D. — Isaac Bruns and Cameron Fens set new career highs to lead the South Dakota basketball team to a 97-85 win over Prairie View A&M in the Sanford Coyote Sports Center Saturday afternoon.
Bruns, who has now reset his career-high in three of the last five games, had a game high 29 points on 9-of-17 shooting with eight rebounds and a steal. Fens was a force in the paint with a career-best 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting and 14 rebounds which was also a new best.
Bruns had it going in the first half leading the way with 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers as the Coyotes poured in 54 points in the opening 20 minutes. Fens paved the way in the second half with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting and eight rebounds (three offensive).
Uzziah Buntyn recorded his fifth straight game with double-digit points with 14 to go with four rebounds and three assists, while Jordan Crawford added 12 points.
South Dakota’s 97 points was the second highest point total in a game this season behind a 47.5 shooting percentage. The Yotes finished 34-of-44 from the free throw line.
The opening 10 minutes of the first half was closely contested with three lead changes and the score tying five times. However, the Yotes found their groove in the final 10 minutes and would build up a 20-point lead, 47-27, after outscoring the Panthers 23-7 over a seven-minute stretch of play. With just four seconds remaining in the first half, the Coyotes went the length of the floor and found Crawford open in the corner, and he would bury a 3-pointer as time expired to give USD a 54-36 advantage at the break.
A triple from Crawford would extend the Coyote lead to its largest of the day (22) 69-46 at the 16:32 mark of the second half. The Panthers, however, wouldn’t go away and pulled themselves back into the contest with a six-minute 17-2 run to cut the Coyote lead to 7 with 10:23 remaining. The Yotes would weather the storm and hold a 6+ point lead for the remainder. Fens and Bruns combined to score 10 of the final 14 points for USD and they got back in the win column with a 97-85 victory.
South Dakota is back in the SCSC next Wednesday when they host Dakota State at 7 p.m.
