The South Dakota Lottery reminds adults that lotto tickets are not appropriate gifts for children this holiday season.
South Dakota Lottery Executive Director Norm Lingle says while lottery tickets are a source of entertainment for players and revenue for the state, they also remind players to play responsibly through initiatives like the Gift Responsibly Campaign. He says through the effort, lotteries and community organizations across North America and around the world raise awareness about the risks of underage lottery use.
Research shows that early exposure to or participation in gambling during childhood is highly correlated with the development of a gambling problem later in life. Often these items– which could include a scratch ticket or a lottery ticket– are given to a child by an adult who is unaware of the associated risks.
The Gift Responsibly campaign is part of the South Dakota Lottery’s year-round efforts to promote responsible play. The Lottery provides responsible gambling resources on each of its products and provides a toll-free, problem gambling helpline, 1-888-781-HELP.
