The Pierre Governor wrestling team rose to the top of the Region 3A tournament once again Saturday in Mitchell, as they totaled 252.0 points. The Govs finished ahead of Aberdeen Central, who placed second with 243.5. Pierre was led by four region champions: Rowdy Menning at 138 pounds, Alex Oedekoven at 144, Jordan Schafer at 150, and Porter Hunsley at 165. They also added four runners-up and four third-place finishers to send twelve wrestlers to the State Meet in Sioux Falls next weekend. Also in Region 3A, Chamberlain placed fifth with 105.0 points and qualified five wrestlers for State. Todd County/White River and Cheyenne-Eagle Butte/Dupree will each send two on to State as well.
Meanwhile the Badlands Brawlers of Philip/Kadoka Area/Wall claimed the Region 4B crown once again in Hill City Saturday. The Brawlers amassed 249.5 points to easily outpace the field, as Custer placed second with 192.0 points. The Brawlers were led by three region champions in Cannin Snyder at 113, Gatlin Cordes at 120 and Shay Weber at 126 pounds and qualified 11 wrestlers for the State Meet. Stanley County qualified five and took fifth place with 123.0 points, while Mobridge-Pollock will send four to State, including Canyon Ford and Wyatt Ziegler, who won the 175 and 285-pound classes respectively. The Tigers finished seventh with 97.5 total points. Elsewhere in Class B, Winner qualified seven wrestlers including four champions in Apollo Willuweit, Rylan Robbins, Roukyn Robbins and Legend Benedict in placing third in Region 3B. Miller/Highmore-Harrold placed fifth with Talon Ping and Chase Hurd standing atop their podiums and send five total to State, and Lyman placed tenth in qualifying one wrestler. Faulkton Area placed fourth in Region 1B, led by 215-pound champion Drake Mueller and five others who will move one. Sully Buttes will send one wrestler to the State Meet, while Gettysburg will hope for an alternate spot or two to open up.
